How a geothermal system heats and cools your home
STEP 1
The ground loop
Pipes buried in the earth circulate water or antifreeze solution. The ground stays near 55°F year-round regardless of outdoor temperatures. This loop transfers heat to or from the earth.
STEP 2
The heat pump unit
Inside your home, a water-source heat pump uses that stable-temperature loop fluid to heat or cool your home. In winter, it pulls heat from the relatively warm ground. In summer, it dumps heat into the relatively cool ground. Either way, it’s working against 55°F instead of 15°F or 95°F.
STEP 3
The result
A system that’s dramatically more efficient than conventional equipment and nearly immune to outdoor temperature extremes.

Is geothermal practical for existing homes?

New construction near Richmond — designed geothermal from the start
A family building on a rural Madison County property outside Richmond had enough acreage for a horizontal closed-loop system. We designed the loop field to match the home’s load calculation, coordinated the trenching during site grading — which saved significant cost versus doing it post-construction — and installed the water-source heat pump unit. Their utility bills for the first full year were a fraction of comparable conventionally-heated homes nearby.
New construction is the ideal time for geothermal. The loop can be installed during site work, and the system is designed into the build rather than retrofitted.
